SPTA Teaching School Alliance immediate priorities:

  • Primary / Early Years / ITT development / SEND
  • Secondary Core Subjects / Humanities / ITT development / SEND
  • Leadership of Curriculum (Teaching & Learning)

Recruitment of SLEs in the East Region is a priority, to ensure that support is easily accessible to academies in that region that are geographically harder to reach. We do however welcome applications from candidates across all of our regions. Successful applicants will be designated with our second Teaching School, which is a partnership between Rowena & The Vale Primary Academies.

SLE's & AST's

A team of Advanced Skills Teachers (ASTs) and Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs) from our Teaching School Alliance are deployed across the SPTA academies to provide a structure for the sharing of expertise and the delivery of learning opportunities at key times such as training days, preparation for inspections and intervention events.

Curriculum leaders, special needs specialists and support staff from the SPTA regularly meet, and are deployed at key times to provide the leadership and the energy for school improvement.

What are SLE’s?

Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs) are outstanding middle and senior leaders who have the skills to support individuals or teams in similar positions in other schools. They understand what outstanding leadership practice in their area of expertise looks like and are skilled in helping other leaders to achieve it in their own context.

Specialist Leaders of education (SLEs) act as 'system leaders', supporting individual leaders and teams in other schools by using a high level coaching or facilitation approach that draws on their knowledge and expertise in their specialist area.

This may involve a wide variety of support approaches, including diagnostic models, and one-to-one or facilitated group support. Regardless of the type of support model delivered, the ultimate aim of SLEs is to contribute significantly to improving the outcomes for children through developing the capacity of peer leaders in other schools.

SLEs support the high quality professional development of leaders and may also potentially play a key role in the future development of school-to-school support, by identifying outstanding future leaders.

For the Academies an SLE will bring a fresh perspective to any specific challenge or issue, as well as the benefit of their specialist knowledge and expertise. SLE support will take a coaching approach, meaning that any development will be collaborative. This will also assure long-term, sustainable improvement, as the aim is to help supported leaders to develop their own leadership capacity.

What are AST’s?

ASTs support the professional development of other teachers through raising standards in teaching and learning.

The Department for Education has said that it envisages that both ASTs and SLEs will play an important role in driving school improvement in their own and other schools to improve their leadership practice. ASTs will continue to work primarily with other classroom teachers to improve their teaching practice.
